Do you enjoy delicious, uninterrupted sleep every night?
If not, you know that feeling all too well of hearing the alarm go off, peeling open your eyes and dragging yourself from your bed each morning (maybe after hitting Snooze a few times!).
I am wondering if you know your Sleep is important to your Metabolism?
But really it is your TOTAL Sleep Debt that counts…. not just how much sleep you got last night.
“Sleep Debt” is defined as the total amount of sleep you missed over time.
And let’s face it, if you have had any babies…. that right there accounts for a LOT of missed sleep over time!
Why does sleep matter so much?
Melatonin, the sleep hormone, also helps the liver rebuild its glycogen supplies.
More Glycogen = a better Metabolism!
As it happens the BEST time for your body to rebuild glycogen and burn stored fat, is during prolonged deep sleep.
Melatonin has also been shown to reverse the exact genetic damage that leads to the spiral of fat build up.
High quality sleep also prevents the body from releasing high amounts of the fat-loss-blocking Cortisol, which can lead to low moods, overwhelming food cravings and a slower metabolism.
Sleep helps you work WITH your genes, rather than them working AGAINST them.
GREAT NEWS…
Even those with genes that make you prone to weight gain and unable to lose it, the more quality Sleep you get, the less these genes matter.
So how does being “well rested” help you?
- You make better food decisions due to your brain’s insular cortex regulating your pleasure-seeking behaviour.
We all experience signals from our brain that sometimes tell us we want high-fuel junk food, right?
But does it have to be Ice-Cream? OR would a Nap work just as well?
Happily the answer is that the less “Sleep Debt” you have, the greater ability you have to CHOOSE how you act on these signals!
